One of Zach Ertz’s biggest plays in last week’s preseason contest came when he wasn’t lined up at tight end at all.
ZE was sent out wide 1-on-1 with former Philadelphia Eagles corner Byron Maxwell—and it wasn’t Zach’s size that sprung him free for a big gain. The tight end used his athleticism and footwork to create space on a post route.
Matt Mullin of PhillyVoice suspected that No. 86 could be seen out wide regularly this season, and offensive coordinator Frank Reich confirmed it.
“Yeah, absolutely,” Reich said. “Zach has such a big catch radius, is such a good route runner, [and is an] instinctive route runner. There’s a certain mismatch when he goes outside based on his size and his route-running skill. So you explore all the options, and that’s one of them.”
No matter where Zach lines up, Ryan Crane of isportsweb believes Zach and his fellow tight ends will be lethal for Carson Wentz and the Philly offense this season.
“As Ertz is just 26-years-old, the Wentz to Ertz connection looks to have one of the strongest upsides in the league,” Crane wrote.
